This Week's Class Videos 8.31.2012

It's the end of another week, and we're here with another wrap-up of helpful and inspring project tutorials from the Garden Girls!  Let's take a look at what went up this week:

Memory Keeping Monday | ZaZa with Shannon Tidwell - Using Memorabilia and Instagram mini booklets on a page:

From Shannon, "Hello! Welcome to Memory Keeping Monday! This week I am focusing on our ‘memorabilia’ theme for the month. I admit, I am usually terrible about including memorabilia on my pages. Oh I save stuff…but I usually forget to use it! Not this time! When I saw this cool ‘do not disturb’ door hanger I just had to have it. I loved the bright colors and original design. I knew it would work perfectly on a page about our weekend stay at this trendy hotel. So I worked the rest of my design around it. 

I also had a lot of Instagram photos that I took during our stay. I wanted to use a lot of them, but still keep the design of the layout ‘me’. So to make room for all the photos I decided to make a couple little flip books by just using washi tape to hold it all together. They turned out really fun, and left me with a lot of room to journal on the back of the photos. 

You might ask *how is she going to put that page in her album?* Well…I thought about it…and what I'll probably do is use a craft knife to cut squares in the page protector right around the photo booklets. That way they'll peek through and we'll be able to flip through them.

The Adventures of Glitter Girl | Episode 035 Fade In/Fade Out

From Shimelle, "This week Glitter Girl takes on the faded monochromatic trend of ombre, inspired by this message board thread [twopeasinabucket.com]. Her adventure takes her through options for creating ombre patterned paper and embellishments, then to completing a page with some of those supplies.

Kristina's Disney Mini Album Series Day 2: Prepping the Album

Welcome back to our series on Kristina's Disney mini album!  A mini album can feel not-so-mini sometimes; we get overwhelmed by all the photos and memories we want to include.  Today Kristina shares how she used the lessons from Lisa Truesdell's Divide & Conquer workshop to tackle the prep work in getting started.  See the video and introduction post from Day 1 here. 

From Kristina, "Lisa's workshop recommends putting together a kit for you to use for your project. Nothing more. I loved this. But I hated doing it. I love products and want to just grab anything at any time. Once I did this though, and really made myself only use the items in my kit, I was so happy.  I was able to take my bin of products with me anywhere in the house and work on this album---which I never do! I had it on the living room floor on multiple occasions and even while cuddled in my bed one night!!

I was worried I would have troubles when I couldn't grab something else from my stash that I knew would work perfectly for my project. But when it came down to it, I made it work with what I had available in my box and I loved how it all coordinates and works together. It really makes it a cohesive book from start to finish.

I will admit to pulling a few more washi tapes here and there when needed. I found myself using washi tapes more and more as I went along, as they are so easy to use and create all kinds of looks. 

I pulled together a set of papers in the same tones and patterns, neutrals and aquas/turquoises. I knew I wanted the circle patterns from Studio Calico, because of how they reminded me of the Epcot Spaceship Earth ball, and then I just went from there. The alphabet stickers, labels, washi tapes and everything else is all in those same color families.

I threw in some other fun embellishments and stickers for here and there, but mainly used papers, labels and tapes. I didn't want any big icons or images, so all of my embellishments are small and basic, so that they really are there to just embellish versus create a main visual. I want my photos to tell the story while my words and journaling to add our personal tales."

Lisa's class teaches you to prep a mini album in stages; one of those stages is to lay out the flow of your album, inserting photos and pieces into the divide page protectors and deciding where you want what pieces to go.  Here is a look at Kristina's album in this stage:

Kristina's Disney Mini Album Series Day 1: Introduction

This week on the blog we're sharing Kristina's Disney mini album!  She's taken two of our workshops, Scrapbooking Family Vacations and Divide & Conquer, and combined what was taught in them to record her family's vacation memories in a mini book.

Here is a little video we put together introducing the series and giving you a peek into her album:

 

From Kristina, "This is a spot that we have traveled to every other year (and sometimes in between) for more than a decade and so, the backdrop of this vacation is well known to those who will view this album---my family. This book is really going to be a documentation of OUR story --- the moments and the memories that we loved and I don't want us to ever forget.

I listened to and watched all of the videos included in Nancy's Scrapbooking Family Vacations workshop before I left. She has a whole section on Disney vacations, with very carefully and thoughtfully laid out plans for documenting that special trip.  Nancy gives great advice on what to look for and how to document as you travel, so you don't have to think too hard as you are on vacation.  For me, it was nice to see how someone else organized the trip and the recommendations for how to record it later. 

A mini book format was definitely needed for me to complete this.

The pocket-album style is one that I used before for previous Disney trip albums where I told the whole story and did the whole shebang. Its a huge album. I love it.

 

The mini pocket album concept as demonstrated by Lisa in the Divide & Conquer workshop is absolutely perfect for this project. I love the pockets and it allows me to diversify what I include and how I include it.  Using her 3 main workshop concepts, I was able to quickly create an album of a trip! I am so proud to have completed this as swiftly as I did!  I love how the workshop kept me on track to only telling the main stories that I want to tell and not wander off, or include things just because it's pretty or cool. I didn't have a lot of room and I needed to make sure I told the real stories that were the most important. And I was able to do that."

Altering a Daybook with Kristina

Amy Tan carries around these adorable little books that she is taping things into all the time…. while she was visiting Two Peas in August, she had a fun little daybook that she had embroidered. I so admired this little book. After seeing her in action with her little mini book and traveling pocket of tools, I was driven to grab a little mini daybook for myself.

Her collections with American Crafts include several styles of daybooks. I selected the stitched daybook from her Sketchbook collection. I love the gray chevron overlay on the front cover and all of the brightly colored prints on the inside. The pages inside are varying in shape, sewn in the middle for the binding, creating  all sorts of interesting spaces to create on.

 

I grabbed the nearest new products on my desk-- washi tape and the Sweetest Thing collection from My Minds Eye and started to add to my daybook. I love to take something like this and make it my own, and not always going with what was given to me. I really loved the chevron overlay, and wanted to make sure that I had that exposed. I added die cuts both on top and behind it on the actual cover to give the Daybook some extra dimension. It was really easy. With the product selection limited, and my colors, theme and intentions decided, it took me only a few moments to really get this cover in a sweet spot. Amy went back and forth with me while I was working on this, adding some washi tape, so I can say that Amy helped to create this little bit of happy. 

My intentions with this Daybook are to leave it on the desk in my creative office area here at Two Peas so that I can add things to it all the time just like Amy does. She carries hers with her and adds bits from her travels. I added the title My Name is Happy to this one (with my favorite letter stickers, by Amy Tangerine, naturally) and hope to add all kinds of random happiness to it as I go through the fall season here.

 

I also added a fun row of colorful washi tape to the inside cover, along with one of the beautiful rose pieces from the My Minds Eye collection.

Memory Keeping Monday | "Nerd Day" by Jen Gallacher

From Jen, "I thought it would be fun to combine our monthly “school” theme with the use of envelopes/pockets. Something about school makes me think of office supplies. Frankly, when my kids are grown I don't think I'll stop buying office supplies. I'm slightly addicted.

For this page, I cut several file folders from the 6X6 paper pad using my Silhouette die cut machine. I layered them on top of one another at the bottom of the page. I also added several layers of pockets and items around the page. I tried to select items that had a school/office supply feel. I changed the photos to black and white because I think it makes them pop a little bit more against the patterns I selected for my papers." ...see challenge and supplies here.

Product Spotlight with Amy Heller: Hexagons

Hi Peas! It’s Amy Heller here and I’m excited to bring you some looks at one of the latest trends in shapes, hexagons! In the past six months or so, hexagons have come onto the scene in scrapbooking in full force! We are seeing them in Peas' pages and cards nearly everyday in the gallery. Today I thought I would share some of my favorite NEW products and member pages featuring this very trendy shape!

Like chevron did last year, hexagons are appearing in nearly every manufacturer’s collections this year. The latest from Echo Park boasts this multi-patterned hexagon paper that makes hand cutting a multitude of intricate shapes/patterns a snap in no time!

Capture the Moments by sstringfellow

Talk about making it easy to use hexagons, the new Teresa Collins stickers make adding hexagons to your projects super simple and without any cutting! Just peel and stick!

This gorgeous page by Pea staceymichu, shows just how much instant impact and design these gorgeous stickers lend to your projects. 

Grouping hexagons into a honeycomb formation is another lovely trend. This stamp from My Mind’s eye makes creating beautiful backgrounds for cards and pages simple by pre-grouping the hexagons in one stamp.

 

 

Of course washi is one of the new staples in scrapbooking, so it’s no surprise that a hexagon washi had to make it onto the market sooner or later! I’m so thrilled that it’s sooner because this set is just so gorgeous with it’s graphic hexagons. 

 

This gorgeous little card from Pea Danni Reid shows how you can instantly add washi tape to create your own custom background. Just beautiful!

Hexagons are, of course hitting the digital market, too, like these wonderful layered Qwik Trix sets from Betsy Tuma!

I love how Kimberly.kalil used these honeycombed hexagons at the base of her page, then also used them for her journaling spot. Terrific page!

I just LOVE how adogslife13 handstitched around the hexagons of this My Mind's Eye paper on this page! It really takes her page to another level and makes those beautiful hexagons stand out!

Lastly, one of the easiest ways to create hexagons has been the use of the Silhouette Cameo like Kathy Martin did here in this darling card. I especially love how she created the outline then filled some of the honeycombs with varying colors of coordinating papers!
