Make & Take with Lisa Truesdell

Hi Peas! I'm excited to be sharing a make and take here with you today for National Scrapbook Day! I'm loving the current triangle trend, and wanted to put it to work on a very graphic card. Here's the how to on how to make your own triangle background with your Silhouette - this will work for pages or cards. I'll also share ideas at the end for how to get a similar look without a digital cutting machine.

 

Open Silhouette Studio and make rectangle the size you want your background to be. Then look for the polygon tool. Once you select it, just click and drag to make your lines - play around with it for a bit and you'll find it's really easy to use! I used the grid markings to help me make an even triangle.

Once you have one triangle drawn, right click and use the copy & paste feature to make more! Line them up in a row.

To speed things up, I made one row, and then used copy & paste on that instead. Fill your entire background with triangles.

When your background is full, delete the outer line - then load your paper and cut your design!

I loved the tone on tone look of my neutral patterned paper and off white cardstock, but decided to back a few of the triangles with patterned paper and overlays for a bit of an accent.

I can't finish a project without a little machine stitching, so I sewed across each row of triangles.

To finish the card, I added some washi tape, a button & heart pin, and a stamped + chipboard letter sentiment. The triangle background is a strong enough look to carry the card without a lot of extra touches. 

Now, I know some of you haven't jumped on the Silhouette bandwagon. I totally love my Cameo, but it wasn't that long ago that i was looking at projects using a digital diecutting machine and wishing I could get the same look! So, I wanted to end this tutorial with a few tips on getting a similar look using just your paper trimmer. Just use your paper trimmer to cut a 1/2in wide strip of cardstock or patterned paper in a similar tone to your background. Next, cut that strip into 1/2in wide pieces - so you have squares. Use your scissors to cut each square across the middle into two triangles. Arrange on your card in the same pattern as my Silhouette cut, and add in a few accent triangles. stitch over them and add embellishments to finish the card. I used this method to make the triangles on my bunny ears layout in the garden - it's a quick and easy way to bring in this fun and trendy shape!
